I saw a new therapist recently. I’m in my late 20s and am very well adjusted to my Tourette’s considering I’ve been dealing with it for 25 years. I informed the therapist on our first meeting that I have Tourette’s and I choose not to take anything for it. The next time I meet with her the first thing she says is “I saw my psychiatrist friend the other day and I mentioned Tourette’s and my friend said that Haldol is a great treatment, so you should try Haldol”
This is problematic on sooo many fronts 1. Your friend doesn’t know me or my medical history 2. I clearly don’t want to take drugs, I’ve tried nearly all of them and I prefer to be drug-free 3. PSYCHIATRISTS ARE NOT TS SPECIALISTS 4. Haldol is an anti-psychotic and, though it may work, it would have major tranquillizing side effects and would be a last resort for any TS specialist 5. She’s a therapist, not a fucking doctor
I’m just tired of people thinking they know what TS is and can speak to treatments when all they know is an episode of a TV show or a paragraph in a textbook
