So there have been many reports about the situation the Padres are in financially. There’s has also been a fair bit of speculation the Padres are likely going to deal him in the off-season, as they can’t really afford him, and they definitely can’t afford signing him to an extension.
I’m curious about what this fanbase thinks of him. He’s a power hitting lefty, who’s a pretty good hitter overall, which would be great to slot him between Bichette and Guerrero in the lineup.
Of course Defensively, we would take a step back in the outfield. It was going to happen regardless with Kiermaier leaving, but it could be risky out there. Varsho is élite definitely, but the left and right fields would be concerning (especially if Springer starts to decline)
The other part would be, what would you be willing to give up for him? The Padres might lose a bulk of their starting pitching to FA, and we do have a surplus on that end. However, there’s a good chance that Soto is a one and done with us, as teams will go for broke trying to sign him (Unless Rogers really opens their pocketbook). You don’t want to trade a ton of good players/elite prospects for a year rental.
We are getting closer and closer to trying to sign our best players to their Brink Truck contracts as well, which could a) Lock the team in for years to come, or b) we could lose one or more of them and take a big step back for years. Even in the A) scenario, we might have to wait for big contracts to expire (depending on how Rogers will handle salaries). These might be the last season or 2 going for it with this roster that should be a contender again.
What do you guys think? Get into the conversations about Soto or stay the hell away?
