How much time should I leave between loosening up and bottoming?

Historically I’ve primarily topped but secretly always wanted to bottom more. Finally decided here recently to embrace that desire. Been going okay but still getting used to it physically.
I’ve read in several places about practicing and preparing beforehand. So I was wondering, how long before a hookup should I loosen up with toys? I want it to be close enough to have the benefit but not so close that I’m just sore during it.
Also, if anybody has any tips for a practicing routine, let me know.
