This one just doesn’t make sense to me. I have to be missing something…

My grandfather was a high school shop teacher so he had a very interesting collection that has slowly dwindled. I was looking through the bucket of hammers and noticed for the first time that the middle part is backwards. I guess having a hammer designed for small nails would do that,, but the distance between the prongs is so slight. Could I be looking at a hammer that is specifically designed for a specific nail?
