How do criminals/fence customers use stolen devices?

Post Body
If my computer, iPad, or iPhone gets stolen, is the thief not going to be locked out from using the device? Does it not brick up after the nth failed password attempt? Even if there is someway to factory reset these devices without a password, Iād think there would be a way for me to tell Apple the device was stolen and have it remotely disabled the next time it connects to the internet. What am I missing?
