EDIT: [Wrote this at 2AM at a sleepover with a friend so had to check Grammar syntax a bit] Every since i can remember, I've had super vivid dreams as well as a tonne of really vivid nightmares. I used to wake up screaming a lot and i had them so often that I'd usually realise i was having them and try to turn them into something good. However, i also get a few extra fun things to work with.
Pre-dreams: When i close my eyes, i get a series of random quickly changing images. At first all i see is the weird circular colored static stuff everyone gets (i think), but then its starts to morph into really vivid images. They're usually cartoonish (cant think of a closer descriptor sorry) with thick black outlines/ hatching for shading and stuff, but sometimes i get really realistic ones. The cartoonish ones usually start in the corners of my field of vision and jump around until all i can see if a myriad of little guys kinda layered on top of each other (think going into photoshop and setting like 100 layers piled ontop of each other to 50% opacity) but everything is still well defined and still has black outlines n stuff. They're constantly changing position really really quickly, but their movements aren't fluid and look sorta like the effect you get when you flash a strobe light and film with a camera with a really high frame rate but more jittery. Then they kinda morph and change until they form more solid shapes and i start dreaming. However, with more vivid/ realistic images they usually flash for a few seconds like a series of printed photographs and kinda get covered by other shit. Some of them can be really fucking creepy.
A recent one i had looked like a high exposure photo of an abandoned meat freezer/ storage area. In the bottom right hand corner of the foreground there was one of those old meat freezers that look like long boxes with a rounded lid that you flip up on it hinges to open. It was really old and looked kinda yellowed with age, and had the weird black mossy shit you get when a building gets left to rot. on the right there was a butchers table, with streaked of the same black mossy shit and a knife rack with no knives hanging above it. It was the same colour as the butchers table as well. Here's the catch 22: it was like an infinite hallway, with a repeating pattern of meat freezers tables and knife racks going alone either side of the concrete walls. The perspective was kinda off with the vertices where the walls met the floor going up towards a vanishing point at an odd angle like the horizon line was at the fucking ceiling, and towards the end it kinda faded into black, with some black (like shadows but solid) flowy people like forms peering in and out of the void. Towards the foreground on the right there was the head of another shadowy dude. He was closer than the meat freezer was but didnt obscure the view of it, and none of his facial features weren't well enough defined to make out exlpicit detail but enough to see that there was stuff there. Except for the nose. The nose was really well defined and it was the only part i cold clearly make out. It was just a standard adult male nose (???) with a general triangular shape. It wasn't outlined by anything and still looked pretty p h o t o r e a l and was the only feature on his face. very s p o o k y.
There were three more spooky images that flashed with this one and i can post in an edit if you want lol. They aren't all super edgy though, and I've seen like castles and badminton courts as well as super markets and stuff.
Weird sensations: When i sleep/ fall to sleep I'll sometimes think of an object and get the weird compulsion to squeeze it. If i do it'll usually be really hard and spiky, but it makes everything feel like its going much faster. Its like Squeezing a brick of lego, but the lego is full of solid spiky worms moving around and pulsating. Everything seems to go much faster and have far more energy when i touch stuff like this too. It happened more when i was a little kid, and usually when i thought of clusters of small objects/ fabric.
Super vivid dreams/ nightmares: I've always had super vivid dreams/ nightmares and I'd often loose sleep as a kid because of it. I've had really good vivid dreams, and if i have them twice i usually just continue on with whatever i was doing in the other dream.
Exhibit A: Nightmare - This was when i was a super little kid (kindergarten - year 1ish) and i was sleeping in my mum's bed. I was on this game show with a live audience, where i had to escape a temple. Every time i died i'd get sent back to the start and everyone would be cheering and laughing at me. At first i thought i was fun but as i was running i fell through the floor and drowned in sand or something. I also remember a little green guy with one eye was there. He was like a box with rounded corners who just kinda watched. i died a few more times and the audience started laughing at me so i cried for the rest of the dream. There was this one stage (and it still fucking terrifies me today holy shit) where I was running from a monster in a really long hallways lined with triangular doors. I ended up deciding to run into one and hide, as as soon as i got in everything slowed down. The interior was like a hotel room made of sandstone. I remember it had a bed, bedside table and like a box thing made of sandstone and a bathroom. I started looking for stuff and ended up going into the bathroom. All i remember about it is it had a mirror and a sandstone sink, a bath on the right and a shower on the left. Shit hit the jet engine when i realized i'd walking through something to trigger the lights to go out. A weird whisper voice sounded from every angle and said "beware of the darkness. For death may strike, or fear",. I started screaming for some reason, turned to run out of the bathroom and got stabbed sending me back to the begining where the audience was laughing at me again. Every time i got sent back i retained my injuries, and by the end i was a weird mass of flesh and meat. The last i can remember was everything turning into a really simple 2D cartoon style drawing and me walking up some temple steps as everyone laughed and threw sandstone at me. I kept crying and asking them to stop, and eventually they helped me up the stairs still laughing. By the end i didn't feel like me anymore but it felt like me crying. I woke up crying and told my mum about it, and she gave me a hug before helping me back to sleep (with more hugs. thanks mum ^-^).
Exhibit B: Firebus dream - I recall having this dream no less than 3 times, all at my nana and pops (grandparent for you uncultured heathens out there) and all as a fairly young kid (9ish i think). I was in a stereotypical American school buss (I'm Australian and we don't have those here but i saw it a lot in cartoons), but it was in hell and turned red with heat. The bus wasn't terrible realistic and was pretty cartoonish, and the heat didn't hurt and i remember it as a really happy dream. However I've felt hot and cold in my dreams as well as tasted stuff as i eat (chewing on nothing irl and waking up sad i wasn't eating food) and occasionally (very occasionally) feeling really sharp pain if i got hit/ shot in a dream) At the end of the bus there were three monsters, but like the kind you would buy your young kid a plushtoy of. One of them was a dark green boxy fellow, with stubby arms/ legs and rounded corners and only one eye. There was a red one who i think also only had one eye but i cant quite remember what he looked like (maybe he was a boxey boi too idk). I remember wanting to be friends with them and wanting to walk up and hug them, but whenever i did they would just kick me to the back of the bus. It always felt like such a rush flying to the bus and playing dead until they lost interest and i could run up and try again and it was really funny. By the end of it i just wanted to get to the other side, and tried going in between them to get through but i always go pushed back. In one of the instances of the dream, i remember there being a really vibrant play house type room at the end with a design on the wall that looked like a meadow and blue sky. It had some toy blocks and a box possessing holes shaped corresponding to the shapes of the blocks, a slide and something else i cant quite remember. Every time I had this dream, i felt like it was continuing on from the previous dream and my relationship with the monster guys developed over time and we kinda became friends (them kicking me back became a game i guess??).
Exhibit C: that dream i thought was a childhood memory for years - My grandma owns a pretty big house and I've had a lot of really vivid dreams within it. One such dream i thought was a memory for literal fucking years. It was a sunny afternoon and yellow-orange light covered everything. I was sitting in her lap on a sun chair on her second floor veranda with my cousin and aunt. They were both talking having run with beers in hand. My grandma was overlooking the neighbor hood with a look of great contempt but something felt really wrong and i was really uncomfortable and anxious the entire time. I realized my uncle wasn't there and i asked here where he was. Her expression completely changed as she turned to me and looked my in the eye saying something i cant quite remember (it was oddly menacing like she'd killed him or he wasn't coming back or something). She then turned away and went back to overlooking the sunbathed neighborhood happily.
Post dream hell: I liked how over dramatic and completely hyperbolic that subtitle was so i decided to keep it, but sometimes after i wake up sound and images don't stop. Last night i was "woken up" by a cat meowing in my sleep. I don't own a cat though, i own a decently sized Airedale who I'm sure would happily devour a cat should he be given the opportunity. I sat up in my bed, thinking my mum had left my window open again and a cat had crawled through to escape the cold (its winter rn). It took a solid 10-15ish (i wasn't counting but that sounds right enough) seconds for the sound to stop. I checked everywhere in my room finding nothing, before surmising that the cat was outside my window. I checked and then realized the sound was far to crisp for it to be behind a sheet of glass. I checked my hallway and there was again nothing. I was mega spooked and just decided to go back to bed.
Though this was more recently I've had this happen sever times before. A quick highlight real of notable occasions was when i was a little kid and i woke up from a night mare to be greeted by a mc villager noise (i played a lot of mc as a little kid and still occasionally do if I'm not swamped with homework) and started screaming cause s c a r ed, the time i woke up with my ears ringing and the time i hear just the sound "a" for a few seconds before my dream ended and after i woke up.
I've also woken up to what feels like electric shocks, with a current like sensation going through my body causing my to have one big violent twitch and a visible blinding flash (think really old tvs being turned on idk). Its happened a few times and has been happening more through recent years (first one i can remember was when i was 12). I've had big visual flashed when I'm awake as well, and i used to think every time i had a flash the Apocalypse had happened and i survived and had my memory wiped, though i haven't had many flashes when im awake within the last couple of months (im not very good with time so i'd say 6ish). The whole apocalypse thing should be taken with the whole fucking salt shaker as i had the hyperest of active imaginations and used to play pretend with myself a lot.
The reason I'm posting is I started talking about dreams to a friend of mine at a sleepover and he told me i should post here about it. I'm cool to add edits if you guys want more info/ find this interesting but I'm not a big posting man on reddit so its probably going to be messy haha.
Is this all normal? Anyone got any ideas why i experience this?
