Question obviously phrased in a way that is USA and politically focused but I don't mean it to be restricted to that.
It's more of a question of do you surround yourself with people who disagree with your personal views and opinions?
Not to change their mind to make them think like you or anything but respectfully appreciate the fact they have differing opinions.
And it doesn't effect the fact that you are friends.
Of your close friends how many of them share your same beliefs versus how many are on the other side... I am personally at atheist but I have a lot of friends that are fundamentalist Christians, Muslim, Hindi, etc --- but none of that stops us from being friends we just all agree that we have a different beliefs and whatnot and instead focus on having fun and what we have in common.
In my case I would say maybe 60% of people I would consider close friends are overall similar thinking to my opinions and viewpoints. Even if not perfectly matching the general lean in the same direction.. But the other 40% sometimes I have incredibly radically different opinions and beliefs than I do.
(I recognize the fact that I have very similar beliefs and opinions that my parents have. So it's only natural to slightly be skewed in the direction of how you were raised. I mean unless you totally just do the opposite but.... My family tends to lean in a direction ... )
The person I would honestly consider my best friend for a long time and we've been through a lot together... Has radically different and polarized points and preferences than I do... We just try to stay off topics that we know we completely disagree about...
I have friends with opposing political views than mine, but not close friends.
