Why is physical intimacy reserved for romantic relationships?

Post Body
I don't mean having sex, but stuff like cuddling, caressing or even kissing. I do have some friends with whom I'm on "cuddling terms", but it still seems that societally it's not that well accepted and some people think that we are dating if we cuddle and so on. Is there any good reason why people are only supposed to display physical affection in this way in a relationship? Or is it just hangovers from Puritanism / religion / etc?
