I read SO many horror stories about adult tonsillectomies that I was legitimately terrified to get one, I put it off for years, but I couldn’t take the tonsil stones for one second longer. I’m here to share a NOT horror story because you can never have enough of these. I am not trying to lead you on or invalidated the very real pain this causes some people. Just merely trying to add a success story sprinkled in
I cannot take prescription strength paid medication, it makes me throw up and to me the risk of throwing up wasn’t worth taking the medicine. So I knew this going in and was extra terrified. I never once felt like I needed it.
Also just by terrible luck I usually always do terrible with things like this, I have the worst luck (talking to someone who had two dry sockets and an infection with my wisdom teeth).
I was at a constant maybe 5/10 with the pain higher on day 3 and days 9-10 when the scabs came off.
This is what I did
I alternated Tylenol and ibuprofen every 6 hours, in the way where I was taking at least one of them every 3 hours. And I mean every. I stayed up until midnight and woke up at 3am, 6am, and 9am to take medicine. They make it clear you don’t want to take a break and have to be chasing the pain. I slept through the 3am one time and I FELT it at 6am. I did this for over a week. Did my stomach pay for it? Yes. But my throat was never in indescribable pain, and I never threw up.
I never stopped drinking water or chewing ice. My water bottle was attached to my side.
Took a lot of baths to steam up the air.
I did not attempt solid (need to be chewed) food until literally day 9. I lived off mashed potatoes, bone broth, protein drinks, and ice cream. Week two I added specifically the flaky biscuits because I could peel apart the super thin layers and eat them. And the bob evans Mac and cheese because it’s super mushy from the microwave and I was starving.
I slept with a humidifier and my mouth taped shut. Breathing in moist air, and allowing myself to snore or sleep with my mouth wide open. I also slept with ice packs
Please be aware of the risks and pain, it’s a very real possibility but if this is something you need and want done desperately just remember there is a chance it won’t be every bad thing you’ve read.
I never bled, I never cried, I never lost sleep, never needed the pain meds.
I’d do it again 1000 times. It is truly life changing surgery. You got this!!! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
