Currently a DM for ToA. I was chatting with a friend (not a player) about Chult in general and we got on to sanctions. They instantly asked the question, “What if someone takes a sanction out against you, but you kill them/killer in self defence?”
I thought this was an awesome question that could go either way.
You allow self defence killings, which turns a sanction into effectively a legal duel that only one side is aware of. Alternatively, you don’t allow self defence killings, in which case the would-be-victim now ends up in the run or gets a visit from the Ytepka society.
Anyone got any thoughts on this? I don’t have many other D&D savvy friends to bounce this off outside my group of players.
Edit: Maybe should have been clearer. I was more gearing this towards what the repercussions for a PC would be if they killed the assassin sent to fulfil the sanction.
