Would Funkadelic's "Electric Spanking of War Babies" count? While they were never the biggest commercial darlings, they were on the up and up at the time as was George Clinton's P-Funk empire. However this album basically ended all momentum he had, all of the singles tanked, and his feud with Warner Bros. basically started all of his financial problems. In addition just look at the original album cover.
