Ogre Writhing One weapon choice
Post Body

I was wondering about the benefit of using a 2h weapon over a staff while using the ogre-wielding talent. I'm still new to ToME so feel free to mention if there's anything I'm missing or have wrong, but I'm not seeing the benefit of having a weapon over a staff. From what I can tell, the benefits of a 2-weapon are the higher modifiers and weapon power, increasing your bump attacks, but I feel like it's not as powerful as using a staff.

Using a staff allows you to focus on MAG, increasing the damage on almost all of Writhing One's skills, including the modifier on both the tentacle and equipped staff. Since you can ogre-wield, you don't have to worry about finding a shortstaff so you can grab the first blight damage staff you find giving you a large buff to your overall damage rather than going all in on bumps.

I also find that staves have more synergy with the WO playstyle. Using WO's long range skills, body-blocking summons, and 2.5 movement skills(Foul Convergence has to target an enemy) I don't find myself in the middle of the fray all that often. In addition, the cone attacks mean you want to be on the outside of fights to hit the most targets. While this does mean you have the potential to lose the resist-all buff by being greater than 3 spaces away from the worm pet, WO has skills that help mitigate that downside, along with others.

  • While you are more likely to lose the resist-all buff from your pet leaping into action, Foul Convergence brings the two of you together giving you the buff on command. And with WO not being class talent hungry, you can skill into the Defensive Posture sustained talent giving you 10-20 armor and defense

  • Ogre-wielding comes with an inherent 20% debuff to accuracy/power that can be reduced with size increases. Horrific Evolution gives a MAG scaling buff to accuracy and spellpower, while Overgrowth applies a 2 size category buff bringing the ogre-wielding penalty to 10%.

Overall I can't see the benefits of a 2h weapon outweighing the benefits of a staff, but I'm not quite knowledged enough to make a definitive say.
