Maybe dumb question: Are melee builds viable with classes without a default attack replacement? Specifically Paladin

Heyo, long time Grim Dawn player giving TQAE a shot. In GD, having some kind of replacement for basic attack was a necessity. In that games there were items that granted skills which could cover it, but just want to know if I've made a big mistake right out the gate going for a melee Paladin? Thank you!
