Running past the curb

So I was told that you should run your tile about 6ā past your shower curb to stop water damage to the drywall at the drywall/curb/ shower wall transition pointā¦ any type of feed back? I see a lot of ppl stopping right at the curb transitionā¦ The 6ā actually makes a lot of sense to me but Iām just a red neck
