Likely causes and solutions for cracking grout on shower curb?

Shower was installed by previous owner, so I don't know what is underneath. Given the separation visible in the pictures I'm guessing he did it himself or hired a handyman. Is this likely to be a curb replacement, or full shower replacement, or something else?
What questions should I be asking of a contractor?
