Last week's Facebook whistleblower and the beginning of the release of the Pandora Papers are a friendly reminder of 2 truths people might not be aware of:
What's good for companies is not necessarily what's good for people, in fact, aside of relatively few well-documented examples throughout history, its often the Opposite. Without detailed and Enforced regulations, things are most likely only going to get worse, if not stay the same and not Improve. Unlike the public comments of Facebook, the whistleblower revealed that Facebook KNOWS that it allows the fostering of Misinformation, conspiratory, and far-right hate groups. They are also NOT encouraged by the "free market" to change that, because those groups increase engagement with the website and therefore increase profits. Even though this is manageable in America, it is not hyperbolic to say that FB has created an environment that fosters far-right assaults and massacres worldwide, such as in Ethiopia and Myamar.
The Pandora Papers, which one could consider a throwback to the Panamá Papers from a few years ago, are a nice reminder that "Trickle down" economics are a lie, the Wealthy don't create jobs when given tax cuts and other benefits, they use that wealth to accrue more personal wealth and to place that wealth away from the Taxman through offshore accounts. Remember that when the hyper-wealthy don't pay their fair share in taxes, they are undermining the social safety nets that help the exploited people in our societies. Without holding these people accountable, workers will continúe to be screwed over with no end in sight.
Also, its not like they're not threatened or worried about this. The leading Journalist of the Panamá Papers was killed by a car bomb in 2017, after their release.
