As Van and Rachel accurately pointers out, state GOP governments are racing one another to see Who can uphold white supremacy in our classrooms the best. However, I would like to bring to light a key Part of the narrative that wasn't mentioned on the pod, and that is how conservative media, specially FOX News, is culpable for turning the academic lens of Critical Race Theory into their latest boogeyman to uphold White Supremacy.
Luckily for me, FOX News doesn't try as hard to hide that Part of themselves, as recent events indicate.
First, let's look at what CRT IS and ISN'T: -CRT is the academic analysis of the relationship between race and legal systems within the United States. It has been around since the Civil Rights Movement and its the foundation of understanding systemic racism. Here are more details: https://www.britannica.com/topic/critical-race-theory
It ISN'T an ideology that tells white kids that they're racist, it doesn't teach people to hate America, and it doesn't teach black children that they're inferior.
The funny part is, CRT isn't even taught in most Public schools. The reason isn't because its inherently bad, but because its a highly complex academic framework of societal analysis, one which requires a functioning and Basic understanding of American society and history as it relates to Race in the first place. https://time.com/6075193/critical-race-theory-debate/
Even with those facts aside, Republican-led state governments are pushing for laws against the Teaching of "CRT" in schools, but use CRT as a scapegoat for opposing the Teaching of ANY systemic racism in American History, including slavery, the genocide of Native Americans, Segregation, etc. https://www.npr.org/2021/06/20/1008449181/understanding-the-republican-opposition-to-critical-race-theory
So, how does FOX News come into play? FOX News operates in a manner where their opinión shows, such as Tucker Carlson, bring up misinformation constantly, then when the outrage from their viewers becomes real, they use their News shows to report on it.
Over the last few months, FOX has skyrocketed its mention of "Critical Race Theory" https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/fox-news-critical-race-theory-mentions-thousand-study-2021-6?amp
Examples of similar phenomenon include the recent wave of transphobia in school athleticism, and a recent conspiracy Theory of the FBI being involved with the Jan. 6 insurrección. https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox-news-manufactured-outrage-about-trans-athletes-right-wing-media-repeated-it-and-earned https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/06/16/tucker-carlsons-tinfoil-hat-theory-blaming-fbi-jan-6/?outputType=amp
Now, not only does FOX NEWS then give airtime to alleged apolitical parents, outraged over the "horrors" of CRT, but ACTUAL POLITICAL AGENTS masquerading as simple, run-of-the-mill people. https://www.salon.com/2021/06/17/fox-news-caught-trying-to-pass-off-gop-operatives-as-parents-concerned-about-critical-race-theory/
What this creates is a self-feeding and never ending loop of outrage sustained by lies that are manufactured and "legitimized" by FOX NEWS, and then exported by even more right-wing outlets, such as Newsmax and OAN.
