Hey everybody. Iām having a little bit of a crisis here haha. I had thought for a long while that I am a Eurasian wolf, but now Iām not so sure. I feel that I am might be a Northwestern wolf. Would anyone have any tips on what I could do to confirm either? Thanks!
As a fellow wolf, I would say to relax for a bit. It doesn't have to be a crisis! All subspecies of the gray wolf are still just... gray wolves, and more similar than different. So, I think it only makes sense to call yourself a certain subspecies if you have a very strong bond to the particular habitat of that subspecies. If you're basing it off tings like pelt colour or size, it will always be a bit ambiguous. After all, the traits of the different subspecies overlap a lot, and even experts can disagree where to draw the line, sometimes reclassifying subspecies according to new evidence.
In my case, I've reached the conclusion that I'm either a smaller-than-average Eurasian wolf, an Iberian wolf that likes the cold, or an Eastern wolf (aka Algonquin wolf) that leans more heavily on the wolf ancestry than the coyote ancestry. And while it can be interesting to read about different wolf populations and speculate, I've given up on trying to pinpoint it exactly. Maybe I would figure it out if I travelled to eastern Canada, maybe something would click, maybe not. But I don't really find it important enough to pay for such an expensive trip just for that.
So... Keep on reading scientific publications about the taxonomy and ecology of different wolf subspecies because it's interesting, but don't pressure yourself into trying be 100% sure about your subspecies. It's okay to just be a wolf. I doubt real wolves think about their classification as different subspecies, you know. They're busy hunting, playing and marking territory.
