What’s this white precipitate formed when freebasing methamphetamine in water?

To water containing methamphetamine HCl I added NaOH and immediately there was a white cloudy precipitate which moved to the top when allowed to settle, when freebasing the solution immediately also release a strong chemical smell which was almost painful to smell, seems about right for an amine but what is the precipitate, I had understood methamphetamine base is an oil.

In which situations is this route economical/viable/preferred? Guess same question to OP. What does it cut out?
