Awhile ago I was in a discussion with someone about the greatest TV shows of all time. We both agreed that The Sopranos and The Wire are definitely up there but for him The Wire is his #1. I said that The Wire is my number 3 behind the Sopranos (#2) and Twin Peaks (#1).
I consider myself a fan of the wire but he told me I was a bad fan because if I was truly a fan of the show it would be my #1 and that the social commentary went over my head. He said that I didn't get a lot of the nuances of the show because if I did it would be my favorite show of all time. It really made me question if I watched the show properly and I ended up rewatching it and even though I noticed more things my second time around I still prefer The Sopranos. Honestly I might've preferred The Wire over the Sopranos if they didn't have the media storyline in S5 (Gus and all them) which imho was a very poor storyline. But he still insists I'm just not smart enough to "get" it. I'm no genius but I think I picked up on the themes of the show so I'm wondering if everyone else here feels this way.
This is why I stopped ranking the positions of my top 5 of anything. The top 5 are of equal quality.
