I went to see the Phantom of the Opera for the first time last year and I had no idea of the plot.
The first act features the phantom warning the cast of the opera in several ways, including parts of the set falling onto the stage.
So when later in the act, the set pieces were changing, something seemed to fall and someone started yelling in pain, it took me more than a moment to realise it wasn’t part of the show and someone had actually been hurt!
The safety curtain came down for about an hour, before a different phantom came out to finish the act. We then got another different phantom and a different Christine for act 2 after about another 40 minute interval.
It turns out a bit of the set fell and landed on the actor playing the phantom and he was rushed to hospital with concussion!
Thoroughly impressed that they managed to do all they could to keep the show going, and the final phantom was making his debut in the role under these crazy circumstances.
Definitely need to go to see the show again without all the drama though, as it was certainly distracting!
I have not witnessed such moments (apart from very minor stuff, like Kim hiding for a few seconds to fix her mic attachment), but the question made me think of the Play That Goes Wrong/Mischeif Threatre. Basically an imagining of the show going on while everything slowly collapses.
