Not too sure how people feel about Hardest to Love since I don't see many people talk about it, but it has been my favourite song since it's release. Hardest to Love is about being in a broken relationship where The Weeknd has hurt this girl and she has hurt him, since this relationship was built on a toxic foundation. This song is about understanding the issues and the next song Scared to Live is about moving on past it for both parties despite still wanting each other.
Now in the next album in Is There Someone Else The Weeknd is in a new relationship where he thinks he is doing all the right things and not repeating the mistakes of his past but the problem is now he is consumed by fear that the thing he did to others so often in the past, is happening to him now since he's never been this honest and open in a relationship. Like when he says "I know I don't deserve someone loyal to me" it's because of hardest to love and despite working on himself he now has new issues to deal with, fear and doubt of what this new relationship will be.
I could be wrong about this stuff it's just my interpretation and I would love to hear if anyone has any different thoughts but this haunting progression has me enjoying both of the songs even more. Even before this song came out when Abel posted part of this song in the teaser I was excited for it, which lead to my surprise that it continues the narrative of my favourite song!
