i understand that some people may like the game just because it shows Clementine's growth and her protecting AJ, so there of course is some emotional attachment to the series by this point. i too felt that. season 1 and 2 were incredible and i'll remember this game for a long time.
but some things just felt really unsatisfying, and it really took away from the experience. im not saying this just too shit on the game, i really loved season 1 and 2 (new frontier was cool, not as good as season 1 or 2 though), but its sad to see the conclusion of this series feel half-assed at times. ill just list some examples off the top of my head, there are definitely more that i just cant think of as im writing this:
every prior season took into account the physical capability of Clementine and other young characters. They weren't able to singlehandedly overpower grown men, or trained fighters. they had to outsmart them, or flee, or rely on allies to back them up. in this season, we have teenage girls and boys (well, not as much the boys since they all seem to end up either dead or captured) singlehandedly taking on grown adults in physical combat and overpowering them, both men and women who are trained in combat. it just doesnt make any sense. maybe i'd have an easier time accepting this if the kids had spent time themselves practicing fighting, but this never happened (or at least, it was never implied or shown).
guns. this was most noticeable when they had infiltrated Lilly's boat, but after killing enemies, Clementine was never able to take an enemies gun or ammo. noise shouldn't even be a factor here, since shots were already being fired. im pretty sure in basically all the other seasons, collecting ammo or firearms was a factor. again, jsut another thing that makes no sense.
enemies being extremely deaf or blind for the sake of plot. enemies walking right by Clementine when she's crouching right next to them or basically right in front of them, and the most notable instance of this i think was Minerva not hearing Clementine chipping away at her cell door when a prior enemy was able to. again, nonsensical.
LGBT agenda. now, i dont mean to say characters in games cant be LGBT, season 3's Jesus was supposedly gay and he was a badass with his combat skills. but, kinda like how Javier being "confirmed bisexual" by the developers felt really forced, Minnie Violet James the route to make Clementine also gay/bisexual just really felt weird and out of place, specifically the route to make Clementine "have feelings for Violet." and, not to dig at the developers again, but James felt like one of those stereotypical yaoi introvert characters u read in manga, and i wouldnt be surprised if that was what was in mind when he was created by the devs. I mean, he's gay, asian, unusually attractive in appearance compared to all the other male characters and considering he wears zombie skin nearly all day, and has that shy personality. idk, maybe im just being overcritical.
Kenny, Javi, Christa/Omid. I know Lee is the most important figure in Clementine's life, and im glad he got some time to shine, but there was almost no reference to Kenny (who, based on ur decisions, is like Lee's successor in protecting a young Clementine and sacrificing himself to lead her to safety, and I know that there is a flashback in season 3 where we see Kenny die due to lazy writing, but that's only if you hadn't stayed at Wellington. Even if we don't see Kenny, at least some memories or something about him? And, even in that flashback, there were only 4 walkers, did Clementine randomly just not have her knife for some reason?), to Javi (who, based on ur decisions, says to bring back AJ to the New Frontier so they can have a home and learn to play baseball though an option for this or a reason this doesn't happen is never given, and Javi is one of Clementine's trusted friends since she lets him cut her hair, something only Lee and herself had done up to that point), or to Christa and Omid (her family after Lee died, and Christa went missing). I get that one of the themes in the story is that everyones gonna die at some point, its a matter of when not how, and moving on. But it feels like characters like Kenny and Javi got sidelined or killed off simply because it would've been too much work to add dialogue or options for them. Like I mentioned earlier, if you leave Wellington with Kenny you get a flashback of his (really stupid) death, but Javi gets basically nothing.
I jsut want to mention Kenny one more time. I got the ending in season 2 where Kenny takes you to Wellington, and I decided to stay there. He gives you his hat, and says to give it to AJ when he grows up as a memory of him, so he remembers Kenny. Season 3 and Season 4 roll around, hat is gone. I can excuse season 3 because AJ is lost in season 3, but season 4 shows no sign of it. Ok, now this is definitely a bit of a minor detail that I shuoldnt get too caught up on, i admit that. But its a bit disapointing because, again, no mention of Kenny ever happens in season 4 to AJ. You would think that some dialogue or memory of Kenny would be brought up at least once, especially since Kenny basically sacrificed himself to save AJ and Clementine. the hat just felt like a symbol for, i guess passing on the will to live or, like a memory i guess. Lee returned Clem's hat to her before he eventually died, so i was hoping Kenny's hat would have some sort of similar emotional weight or something behind it, but whatever. nitpicking, yeah yeah.
Clementine should have died. yeah, i don't want her to die, but it doesn't make much sense how she didn't turn into a walker after the amount of time that went by after she got bit, that's not even considering she got bit on her already wounded leg that was bleeding out. Lee got bit on the arm, and even after cutting it off maybe like 30-60 minutes later (same amount of time Clem spent i'd say, getting through the cave and then into the barn and then helping AJ fend off the walkers until she finally got her leg cut off) he still ended up dying.
