My theory (SPOILER ALERT)

Follow the dog, there's a portal between the parallel universes and the dog knows it. And maybe the dog was actually killed by Campbell, but when someone dies on new new ham doesn't affect their lives on original New Ham, which makes me believe Cassandra, Emily and Dewey are still alive. I know we are supposed to believe they are all dead, but they could have simply disappeared and their parents are assuming the worst.
