What's the point of scanning the pokestop?

So, scanning a pokestop. I might be missing something, but it doesn't seem like it gives you any in-game rewards (unless you have a Field Research that specifically asks for it.) Does anyone know why this is?
And what does Niantic use these video files for? Are they all stored somewhere?
