I live in a fairly metropolitan suburb outside of a large city. It's fairly safe but I personally wouldn't got outside alone after 10pm just to stay on the safe side. However, since I go on weekly runs, I noticed I hardly ever saw anyone under the age of 18 walking about the neighborhood even though there are plenty of parks around.
When I was growing up, during the summer, I remember walking around to the various parks, making up games with my friends, and generally making mistakes/getting "my knees scraped up," unsupervised! This I feel is key.
Kids have important life lessons to learn on their own sometimes. We grow by learning to rely on ourselves and work through problems in life, friendships, and hardships.
Since PokemonGo has released in the US, it is the first time I've seen a small resurgence to this aspect of human life. Getting outside and experiencing the small world around you (ON YOUR OWN) at a young age so that you can realize what else could be out there. Yes, there is always the potential for danger, but I believe the risk is worth it. So, thank you PokemonGo for getting the kids outside!
