Quiz time? Quiz time.
Post Body

Ok, so I've been sitting on this one for quite a while now. Superhydride's excellent bumper xmas-new year one is over and done with (answers here if you missed them), so I thought I'd post it before someone beat me to it.. Muahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaa!

You'll have plenty of time to get it done and it's short answers again so not too much work to do. I'll include a blank answer sheet as the first comment so you can copy and paste that to save even more work!

Round 3: Fly in the oinkment! Listed below are ten spiffingly silly scientific names of various insects- flies, beetles, bugs and more. Simply tell me whether it’s real or one I’ve made up! Just to prove that scientists do have a sense of humour!

  1. Families of animals always end in the suffix -idae. For example, the giraffe and okapi belong to the Giraffidae. So how about this family of fossil flies- the Serendipidae!?

  2. A rare species of African stag beetles was named after Arsenal’s everlasting manager- Wengeris passitini.

  3. Emogys ardum, a moth named by a grumpy scientist who may not have a smartphone and definitely doesn't use smileys in his messages.

  4. Verae peculya, a.. very peculiar small parasitic wasp.

  5. Colon rectum, a species of round fungus beetle.

  6. Another type of fungus beetle, this time the genus Gelae, and it’s eight species- Gelae baen, Gelae fish, and Gelae donut, among others.

  7. The genus of beetles Agra, including species such as Agra vation, Agra phobia, and Agra cadabra.

  8. Phthiria relativitae, a fly belonging to a group also known as bee flies.

  9. A genus of small flies, Pieza. Species include Pieza rhea, Pieza pi, and Pieza kake.

  10. Heerz lukenatcha, another type of small parasitoid wasp.

Round 4: To spider, or not to spider? Ok, here are eight pictures of animals. The may be spiders, they may not be. Below them is a list of words that you can add “spider” to, in order to create matching names for the animals in the photos. See how many you can get!

Words to use: Sea, mite, assassin, crab, whip, camel, ant-mimic, ladybird-mimic.

Bonus point: Which three of the above were actually spiders?

Round 5: Funny animal names that aren’t flies! Same as before, except that these animals aren’t insects! True or false will do.

  1. The bird literally called Arses, a genus of monarch flycatcher commonly found in New Guinea and Australia.

  2. A species of salamander endemic to China called Batrachuperus longdongensis.

  3. Ever heard of Gamba grass? Primarily found on the African Savanna, it's tall enough to hide even elephants at times! Anyway, its scientific name is Andropogon gayanus. Or is it?

  4. Cindarella, a genus of early arthropod from the Cambrian Period (541 – 485.4 Ma) of China.

  5. Torpedo torpedo, an electric ray that lives in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.

  6. My favourite species of snail- if you’re allowed such a thing- is a Fijian land snail called Ba humbugi.

  7. Obamadon gracilis, a fossil lizard from the Cretaceous Period. It literally translates as ‘Obama’s slender tooth’, “in reference to the tall, straight teeth, and the manner in which Mr. Obama has acted as a role model of good oral hygiene for the world”.

  8. Aennieder bigrboat, a smaller relative of the Greenland shark named after the line from the famous Steven Spielberg film.

  9. Pattreciar butcheri, a small fossil bird, was named after the famous Eastenders character a few years back.

  10. Han solo - a tiny fossil trilobite from the Ordovician Period (~485.4 – 443.8 Ma) named after the famous Star Wars character for a dare (with a slightly longer ‘official’ reason for the name).

  11. A new species of gibbon was discovered in January 2017 and named Hoolock tianxing, ‘tianxing’ translating as ‘heaven’ or ‘sky’, and ‘walk’, in reference to the Skywalker family of Star Wars.
