Anyone here able to explain to me in laymans terms our taxes?

I'm trying to compare them to my American friends taxes but I'm just getting myself in a right pigging muddle as I try to do it.
I imagine the fact I'm 18 and that's it 1:24AM contributes to this :I
Actually, saying that, if I can wrap my head around this it's going to be useful when I end up with my own place.
Sorry if this not the right place for this, but /r/ukpolitics certainly didn't seem like the best place.
