Lucien was the only truly intelligent Vampire. He spent his immortal life studying and researching how to improve himself, and his death/lack of further insight into the technologies he developed are a real tragedy. The TVD universe doesn't explore the scientific aspects enough. The man created a werewolf bite cure, which no magic user has been able to replicate, save siphoners.
Unfortunately, his character was hindered by his love for Aurora and he was a "villain".
