Let me start by saying this is a rant I was thinking about in the shower, Iām just curious to see if anyone else experiences this/feels this way.
Iām 20m, and I think some older people are ignorant when it comes to my generation listening to the music of their generation. First off I understand not all adult/older people are like this, I listen to a lot of older music, older than the offspring(Bon jovi, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, etc). So Iām used to older people being kind of suprised when they hear what my music taste is. Iām used to hearing things like āwow I havenāt heard that band name in a while!ā Or āthat was one of my favorite bands as a kid!ā. Those arenāt the comments Iām talking about. In fact I love hearing stuff like that because it usually strikes up a thoughtful conversation. Hereās an example of what Iām referring to:
One day im at work on a weekend. Weekends are casual so im in jeans and one of my offspring shirts, when one of my coworkers probably in her 30s/40s says āare you even old enough to listen to the offspring?ā Like im sorry but wtf does that even mean. Not only have I been listening to them since I was young, I even have their logo tattooed on my arm! Do these people just assume that because that music is from a different generation I have no access to it and no reason to listen to it.? And these are the same people who will bash a teenager because they donāt know who axl rose is or something. Now of course I just laughed it off at the time and was like. āYeah haha theyāre actually one of my favorite bandsā.
Another similar situation happened a year or two ago when I was out with my mom; at the time they were playing a Bon Jovi song on the radio, which is my all time favorite band since I was a kid. I mentioned to my mom āhey theyāre playing Bon Joviā and the store associate helping us whoās a guy probably in his 50s goes āyour mom probably knows a lot more about Bon Jovi than you doā in this smug ass tone.
Comments like these just come of ignorant and distasteful, like do these people not know that we have music streaming which gives us access to almost any song ever released? And the people who do say āoh your not old enough to know themā or āyour to young to listen to themā are the same people who will laugh at you when you donāt recognize that one song from 1978 that no oneās ever heard of! Iām a very calm person so when this does happen I donāt get upset or anything, I usually just forget about it and like I said I usually laugh it off and move on to the next subject, but does anyone else my age experience this?
