And I laughed and said "no, just watch," but then I wondered ...
But first, some context: my bf and I have been dating 6 months and have very different music interests. He's a metalhead, I am currently posting in r/TheNational, for example. We overlap on enough that we can jam out together in the car, but we've long been swapping music so we can tell each other how terrible it is introduce our faves to each other since the beginning. We've barely scratched the surface. Especially with my mission to get him to love The National.
Of course, he had the stereotypical "this is depressing" reaction when I first introduced him to The National. I tried explaining it's not just the music, that the lyrics are an experience of their own, not to mention live, omg LIVE!! I think MFS may have made him look at the band differently, like very differently! This is good, yeah! He was confused at the beginning. Once he realized it's a self examination of Tom, not-really-exactly-a-documentary about The National, and that they are all sets of brothers (he's also super close to his bro), he was less afraid of it being boring, lol.
So afterwards, we talked about if it were a mockumentary, the real moments were a little too real, but it would be funny (ironic, not haha) if they set out to do a lighthearted mockumentary, starring each band member's own sense of humor, then it devolved into a hot mess because of Tom being perpetually in the way. As evidence that maybe filming MFS started off a little bit silly, we have Bryce's amazing, uncomfortable, and very funny (deadpan?) interview about never getting to talk about himself that will leave me and my bf forever guessing.
What do you think?
