A question about Red John in s3 finale that has been in my head, not exactly plot related. Spoilers of course.

So I'm a big fan of the mentalist but I've never followed the writers twitter/interviews all that much so I never find out about whats behind the scenes.
Was the whole fake Red John killing scene thought out for the story from the beginning or was it a quick wrap-up way to end the season because the show was in danger of being cancelled?
