So, I've just finished watching The Leftovers and man am I feeling a gaping void in my life now. I am a huge fan of Lindelof and this was just absolutely amazing on so many levels. There's so much for me to process right now though and I need to offload some serious thoughts and feelings about what I've just witnessed.
The themes around coping with the unexplainable and trying to make sense of it are very much ringing true to me right now. I went through the whole 3 seasons with so many questions that my partner and I were constantly theorising about, hoping that they would all be concluded in the end. And of course (as the synopsis of the last episode states), nothing is answered. Everything is answered.
I know that the point of The Leftovers is that some things just cannot be explained and there is no point trying to connect them to some sort of logical conclusion, but I'm still left itching to discuss some areas in which I still have questions. I'm sure most of these have been discussed at length but I wanted to list them out for my own sanity. In no particular order:
- On the day of the departure when Kevin goes for a run, whilst he's smoking a cigarette a car of women pull up and ask him if he's 'ready'. Does anyone have any theories for this at all?
- What's the deal with David Burton? Do we think he just possessed the same power as Kevin but instead of denying any sort of prophecy or 'chosen one' mentality he believed he was God?
- The earthquakes in Jarden at first I thought represented Kevin coming back from the dead, as one occurred when he initially tried to drown himself and then one occurred when he first came back after being buried. But there is one at the end of season 2 when he returns to the house, any thoughts here?
- If Kevin destroyed the afterlife world at the end of season 3, does that mean it's destroyed for other people like David Burton too?
- Do we actually think Miracle was special?
- Is Kevin's heart condition something to do with his ability to come back from the dead?
- When the original season 1 theme song played at the beginning of episode 7 of season 3, I thought it must be key but I'm not sure how. I liked how they used the 'let the mystery be' theme for final episode as I think it fits quite well with the ending narrative. Anyone else had any thoughts on this?
I'm aware that an underpinning reason for many of these questions could just be coincidence or unexplainable phenomenon - which I guess it sort of the point of the show - but still I feel the urge to share.
