Got thinking about Part 2 due to the trailer for season 2.
Now please correct me if I'm wrong as it's been some time since I played Part 2, but I can't recall anyone from the game being angry about what Joel cost them beyond "he killed my dad and our friends". At most there's a comment about how Jerry was the best doctor that they knew of.
Knowing that the reason Joel rampaged through the hospital was because of this miracle child, you'd think that trying to find Ellie so they can at least TRY to secure her until they can find someone to do research and conduct the procedure. Why is Mel not spearheading this, as she was Jerry's best pupil? They ALL just sort of drop it to play soldiers for the WLF.
The quest for revenge feels needlessly risky for no real gain. Imagine if the crew attacked Jackson to capture Ellie, but the mission goes tits-up because Abby can't stick to the plan because of her hate for Joel. Her lust for vengeance costs them a second chance at saving humanity. This feels like a stronger foundation for the theme of "cycles of violence" that Druckmann wanted to explore, but what we got feels so superficial.
This is gonna be an odd one, but my "theory" sometime before Part 2 came out was that Tommy was going to have a hand in Joel's death. My reasoning was based off the tense relationship the two had in the first game. I thought "ya know? I wonder how Tommy would feel about Joel killing the people he had served with in hopes of leading to a brighter future? Did he believe that a vaccine was possible? Would he resent his brother for taking away the chance of saving humanity? How far might he go?" I didn't think Tommy would necessarily intend for Joel to die, but that his actions might lead to that unfortunate consequence. In a sense I was right, except all it took was for him to go "I'm Tommy. This is Joel". Ugh..........
What are y'all's thoughts?
