I get that she didn't want to leave Gilead without her daughter.
I get that she knew she was sending her baby to a safe country.
I get that means that she might have to sacrifice her relationship with Holly/Nichole in order to attempt to bring her other child to safety.
But I have to say, I feel like forcing the baby onto Emily with NO warning or discussion was a shitty, shitty move as both a mother and person.
Emily is probably the most outwardly damaged person on the show. Clearly suffering from severe PTSD and probably a host of other psychiatric issues. Now, I'm not saying that the mentally ill cannot be good parents- they absolutely can. But most people with severe mental illness have difficulty coping with parenting their own children- let alone some newborn just pushed onto them out of nowhere. Those first few years are enormously stressful under the best of circumstances, and Emily is now going to have to try to recover from her ordeal, rebuild her life and (hopefully) reconnect with her family with a baby in her arms. It's incredibly selfish of June to foist that responsibility onto her.
I've seen some people state with certainty that Emily will take good care of the baby... based on what, exactly? That she already has a child? That she's so grateful to have the chance to bring a baby out of Gilead and spare her from her fate? I just don't believe that. I'm sure she won't mistreat Holly/Nichole, but a woman in her position just may not be able to cope with the demands of having a baby. In the real world, I would expect Holly to be put into foster care, or adopted by a family. In the real world, I'd expect that most people wouldn't be wholly accepting of raising a stranger's child without giving it some serious thought and being willing to commit to it- and rightly so.
I guess we'll have to see how it plays out.
