I was late to the series and I’ve been bing watching and just finished S5E10 last night.
Here are my overall comments. I like how the series shows how Canada slowly deteriorates into what the US used to be. For instance when Luke and Moira first came to Canada there were generous government assistance programs and when Serena and Fred Waterford visited the Canadian government and Luke published the handmaids letters there was an uproar. There was a generous typical Canadian niceness and openness to Canada then.
Several years on and when Fred gives his plea at the ICC and religious fanatics are already there supporting him.
Then several years later in little America in Toronto you have make Canada great again type people who hate immigrants and side with gilead.
This parallels what had happened earlier in America. From a liberal place where LGBTQIA are professors and deans of schools to the privatization of CPS to the conversion of abortion centers to “pregnancy centers” then to a coup in Washington then to martial law and then the establishment of an authoritarian regime.
What happens in Canada mirrors what happened in the US, it just happened later.
It’s such a strong political statement and warning on what could happen to America. Love it!
