Where to go from there? Should we restart? Too much Mutants/Cannibals

I looked up at Sons of the forest reviews and wanted to play, but tought: Why not play the first one before.

So me and my friend, we start The Forest. we play 3-4 hours, explore a lot, build a basic base with a wooden palisade between the beached ship and a small lake in the southeast. We explore a cave, havest some things, quite fun. But a multi armed guy hits us hard, and its late we call it a day.

We decide to restart. To our surprise we are spawned elsewhere northwest, between beach containers and the Hole.We decide to go full base building, and with our back and a side 'protected' by a Cliff overlooking the beach, we place a double height stonewall on the 2 remaining sides, with a few happy birthday traps and deadfall traps. 3-4 hours later, we stop

Next game, we start building a house.... OMG so much Logs! We get the Multiarmed and a few lady spiderhands, whaever their names. and a lots of cannibal who dodges our arrows and jump over the Happy birthday. Annoying but ok. We build a second row of 5-6 traps. it must be day 20? I guess.

We decide to go exploring at this point, fully armored. The thing is: We can't move 2 steps without encountering a lots of Cannibals/Mutants. Everywhere... I mean I don't mind them grouping to attack our base, but far away there's multiples groups of 5-6 always roaming. We often fall back to the base to prevent losing to much armor... and then we go out again, enemies everywhere.

Yesterday near the end, a Charging rhino crash through the traps and destroy like half of them. At this point we decide to call it a day.

We loved Green Hell because the natives attack your base with more numbers, but when you are exploring there's not hordes every 10 feet.

So what are your suggestions for a full first playtrough?Hoard up and go build on an Island?Forget the base and just explore?Build multiple bases?Spend 5-10 hours just building traps?Should we add some spawning rate mods?
