How vital to the plot are the novellas?

Post Body
I hadn't known about the novellas until recently, having just been working through the main story so far. I just finished Nemesis Games and I'm hearing about them for the first time. Looking at the previous ones, they seem to be about background colour and just fleshing out the universe, but it occurs to me that they might not all be like that. Is there anything in them that is a must read for the overall plot? Really good ones?

Strange Dogs gives some background on Cara and Xan who appear in TW and who I think will be important in the next book.
But the rest aren’t as important and just give background. The one about Amos shows his past and is good too. Also drive is a short and free read on the Scy-Fy channel’s website and is also in the show.
