When the Laconians accidentally discover that they can use the alien station to trigger gamma ray pulses that target all the gates at once, I was initially confused. I thought it meant that they could send these pulses through the gates, and so my thought was, "That's great for them, but how are they going to protect their home world from getting hit by one?" Also, I kept expecting a pulse to show up in Sol system and was confused when that didn't happen.

There's one of two possibilities here: 1) They can fire GRPs through the gates but only if they're open. Laconia and Sol gates must not have been open when Heart of the Tempest used its magnetic field weapon the first time; 2) The GRPs are always contained within Ring Station, even when there are gates open (the pulses can be targeted against the gates but can't be sent through them). I don't know which it is for sure, but #2 seems unlikely (if light and radio waves can travel through the open gates, albeit distorted, why not gamma radiation?).
