The books described how some people would go on "basic." But that would ensure that they would be poor and live a terrible existence more or less for life. But they wouldn't have to work, and all their basic needs were met. I can't help thinking about the "Universal Basic Income" idea that has been championed by certain politicians in the last few years. Seems like UBI might be a step in the same direction as "basic" in the books (maybe "basic" it's a not-so-subtle reference to UBI). I'm not for it or against it, just curious about people's opinions. Would UBI lead to a world like that depicted in the books? Why or why not?
