What band pushed the envelope further than what the cure did on pornography? any bands w albums of dark ambient/goth rock that’s even darker/gloomier

I grew up listening to the deftones and i feel like they have a lot of cure inspiration but also make music w little darker/moodier. i wanted to know if there’s a band more similar and or closer in age to the cure.
