I absolutely love the original film, and am putting in the work to regrade the color (I have both the US and JP blurays as well as a 35mm scan of various parts of the movie for grading references) and while the picture quality of the JP release was great, the color grading was less than expected, with the opposite effect on the US Bluray. The US one is closest in terms of color so I’ve made some compatible files to ease the process via lossless screen capture and various adjustments. So what I’m doing is taking the JP BD video source, regrading it to the US release and 35mm scene scans, once all adjustments are done, I will finish off by doing a noir regrade with some minor noise and grain adjustments to have clarity while still retaining a film feel. If there’s any interest feel free to DM me and I will provide updates as I go along. It’s a time and hardware consuming process and I have nowhere near the current standard for editing equipment. So for those that show interest, please have patience as I will update with screenshots etc as they come. Much love to everyone on the forum. I also plan on doing the rest of the original movies at some point as well but this is my main focus for the time being. Rough screenshot of the workflow after some basic adjustments are done but well before the finished product.
This is one hundred percent a passion project for me, I require no donations or anything else and won’t ask for them. If they’re offered in most cases they will be politely declined unless my kids need essentials lol. I do this for Brandon, for Alex, for James, and for everyone that has fallen in love with this film.
