New comics sci-fi version of TCoMC by Ibrahim Moustafa

Wow... I'm just stunned by this. I was running a library search for more comics/manga versions, and this came up. I already have a Hoopla ebook subscription, so I was able to read it this morning, after discovering that such a thing existed last night. It's like a sci-fi story that's heavily inspired by TCoMC, but it has its own twists and turns and characterizations. The characters had been renamed, and the Haydee role is taken over by 2 different characters. The Dantes analog is forced into to-the-death prison yard fights at Chateau D'if, and, since it's not set in mid 19th Century France, the roles of women have been greatly expanded, and the cast now includes major people-of-color characters- all without feeling like forced political-correctness.

Dantes-analog is out for direct revenge against his 3 enemies, the Fernand, Danglars Villefort analogs, and doesn't try and involve their children or families, so it doesn't have the complexity of Dumas' original. Action is emphasized. Interestingly enough, the Dantes-analog gets involved in overthrowing a tyrannical, corrupt government and siding with the common, oppressed people... similar in many ways to the 1884 non-Dumas "sequel", "The Wife of Monte Cristo" by Jules Lermina.

Finally, digital coloring is used to its best advantage here. I absolutely *despised* the messy digital coloring overlays that were done to the 1956 Classics Illustrated comic that just made things look worse. With "Count", the digital coloring was always meant to be part of the book from inception, and it's beautiful. And the artwork... marvelous!

Recommended!

Goodbye, Gankutsuou B&W manga with the ugly chicken-scratch drawings, abrupt time and scene shifts, confusing plotting and overly-dark tone. "Count" by Ibrahim Moustafa wins the crown as the future world sci-fi versions of TCoMC!
