I’m curious to see if Carmy drastically changes his attitude in the coming seasons. With Syd contemplating leaving and pretty much all of Carmy’s relationships on the rocks, it would be kind of crazy if he didn’t try to make a change. At this point Claire, Sugar, Richie, Syd, and his mom all have an extremely strained relationship with Carmy.
I think the point of season 3 was to drive character development since plot of the show didn’t really progress. The restaurant hasn’t changed much other than the financing issues and the beef window opening. After watching the trauma dump is s3e1 and seeing Carmy finally look in the mirror in s3e10, I expect some major changes.
Carmy adopted the characteristics of the people he hated most, specifically his mother and Joel McHale’s character. Chef Andrea was a favorite amongst her employees and friends, and many of her former chefs drew from her for inspiration in their own lives and restaurants. I expect Carmy to try to do the same.
The only problem with a change in attitude is that I think the show could lose a bit of the edge that makes it good. The concept of the show is decent, but the tension and intensity make it good. If Carmy becomes even-tempered and reliable the writers will have to find a way to create more intensity within the plot (rather than Carmy and Richie yelling “Fuck you” at each other for an entire episode). I’m curious to see how this plays out.
