He tells Carmy that he doesn't need the extra distractions. That he needs to put everything into the resturant. Carmy takes this to mean, during his breakdown, that he doesn't need Claire. That he doesn't need to be a person and that the resturant is all he needs to focus on.
But here's the thing. Cicero is god damn wrong. The whole show is about how much Carmy needs to look inward. He traveled the world, worked at the best resturants, and he still came back to mom and dad's fucking place. Claire is the first time we see Carmy actually happy. Not satisfied with a job well done, or delighted to find thousands of dollars in cans of tomatoes. But happy about something.
Because he was distracted (and the general chaos of opening a resturant) he doesn't call the fridge guy. He gets locked in there. But everything is okay. He feels scared because he has no control but he and Sydney and Sugar all did such a good job that this one thing doesn't take the resturant down. Carm took his eye off the ball but gonzalez still caught the ball and the cubs took the series. Carmy fucked up cause he didn't know how to be happy and successful. I imagine season 3 will be about him figuring that out and navigating it. And hopefully he'll get back with Claire but that's just me lol
