There are so many things I disliked about seasons 3-5 of the show, but Alison’s death tops it all! I literally could not believe they killed her off. I immediately started season 5 just to check if Ruth Wilson’s name was in the credits. After finishing the series tonight, I finally googled info about the show and read about Ruth Wilson’s issues with the show and why she left (pretty disheartening). But they did not have to destroy her character this way! I get that this is meant to be a dark series. Yes, not all characters have a happy ending, especially one who’s life is filled with trauma like Alison’s, but seriously her death was so unbelievable and unnecessary! Alison’s character deserved so much more than to die in such a stupid way. Heck, it would’ve made so much more sense for her character to be overcome with grief again and commit suicide. Murdered by a random guy she had just started dating? Nope—can’t buy it! I will never forgive the writers or this show for this. They really ended Alison’s journey this way?!!!
Ideally, I would’ve loved for Alison and Cole to get back together. I think that story feels so real and relatable. They knew each other since they were so young and went through such a horrible trauma together when they lost their child. Through it all, they still loved each other. I enjoyed watching Cole struggle with his feelings for Alison. He was afraid of the pain and the chaos that came with loving her, but ultimately felt like all of that was worth it for her. He even apologized for having her carry his grief for all of those years. If both actors wanted out of the show, season 4 should’ve ended with Alison and Cole figuring out how to be with each other again and moving out of Montauk to start a new life with Joanie.
If Alison and Cole were not going to be part of season 5, at least give us closure!—not Alison being murdered by a random guy (who later has the strangest, creepiest, and most unsatisfying storyline ever in season 5). I read that her character was originally going to be violently raped and murdered so at least they spared us that much, smh!
