I know, I know. You’re not supposed to yuck other peoples yum anymore. Taste is subjective.

But the same way that we outgrow children’s television and move on to more sophisticated, adult programming, people should move on from music that was intended for teenagers. I look at so many people from my generation getting excited about Blink 182 reuniting, and I get second hand embarrassment for them. Sure, I had Enema for the State when it came out. But hearing that music now makes me wince.

The same goes for a lot of pop punk from this era. Nu metal is another one - liked it as an angry angsty kid, then I moved on to better things. I can’t relate to it anymore - the lyrics are like bad teenage poetry. I don’t think well adjusted people in their 30s and 40s still listen to Korn or Staind.

And for a more modern example, Taylor Swift. This is music for 12 year old girls. It’s not deep, it’s not musically interesting. When I see a grown woman calling herself a Swiftie, I see that as a red flag. Lots of pop has been this way for years, but it used to be a genre primarily for tweens and teens - now I see dudes pushing 40 or even 50 discussing girl pop stars like they are making high art.

There is such a huge world of amazing music out there and it’s never been easier to access. It bums me out when people settle for the same music they listened to when they were 13, or only think the most popular artists are worth listening to. Poptimism is the worst thing to ever happen to music.
