I don't get why people prefer to listen to music on their smartphones.

Post Body

I used to be an avid Spotify user, until DankPods and Baby Driver made me buy an iPod. After modding it with a 3000mah battery and flash storage, that thing was unstoppable. The battery was unnecessarily overpowered, it lasted for ever and ever and ever, I would put music on and don't listen to it for like a whole day, the battery didn't spend half of its capacity, and I'd just charge it while I slept and it was good to go. The flash storage was also amazing. It is so convenient to have a small music player specifically designed for music playing... the iPod broke while I fucked with it. Now, I'm having to temporarily use Spotify, and man, does it suck. There is no warm, cozy feeling like "my ole' reliable boy will play me music", the batery drains out QUICK, the music fades with each and every dumbass Instagram notification, the sound quality sucks (I'm not even an audiophile), the thing (smartphone) is chunky, big, unpractical, I have to share it with other activities, I really don't get the appeal. Also, you don't own your own music. And it is expensive as hell. I'd rather carry two devices and having each one be made specifically for its function than having to use only one for everything and it not being ideal. And I'm not even touching the "going off-line, dopamine detox" aspect, as I'm a dopamine addict and I don't care. It's just so convenient to have an iPod. It is reliable, durable, practical, tiny, etc. Fuck Spotify I hate it!!!

You don't own the music on your iPod either unless you bought it from somewhere like Bandcamp at which point I'm unsure what the difference is.

Personally I also never considered the iPod interface to be particularly pleasant but to be honest I'm 97% team audiobook so that might color my overall view. I think navigation on a smartphone is less constrained and faster with just the right amount of edge.

I used Spotify mobile not for that long so again can't speak to that specifically.
