"... then we find our humanity again" = commentary on US politics

I just read an article in r/Politics about a pro bono group of attorneys that has reunited more than 100 migrant children with their families over the past month.
And all of the sudden I remembered Abby's quote.
First we survive, then we find our humanity again.
And it seems like an allusion to "surviving" the Trump administration, and the hope of finding our humanity again once his grip was released.
Getting kids out of cages is definitely a step in that direction. Humanity is making a comeback.
