Thoughts and negative aspects of the show so far
Post Body

I just finished watching the whole season. I can't think of many positives but here are just some things I find really annoying so far:

Sheer laziness from the writers and not being consistent with the original show like Donna calling Kitty 'Mrs. F' (WTF was that?) or Eric being 38 in 1995 even though he was 17 in 1976. Also the whole thing about Donna calling Kitty 'mom' was really weird.

Eric is still acting like he is 17, stuck on Star Wars and still a mama's boy. Way too much Star Wars references in general, not enough actual good lines from him. Wasted opportunity especially if there is no second season or no more cameo appearances from him. Also, I don't understand why he wasn't in the last episode of the season yet Donna was.

Ozzie (the Asian kid) is the new Randy: Unfunny, inappropriate, doesn't fit with the others and generally feels forced. I'm sure the actor is a fine person but the character made me want to punch someone every time he opened his mouth.

Most of the kid actors don't know how to act, it feels forced and cringey. Even Callie Haverda (Leia) isn't that good though without her and the Formans I can confidently say this show would be totally unwatchable. Generation Z actors in a Generation Y series simply do not go well together, I don't understand why they couldn't have gotten actors in their early 20s to play the kids roles.

Most of the jokes are not landing, I don't think I laughed even once throughout the 10 episodes. At most I may have chuckled once or twice but that is literally it. 100% of those chuckles were when the original cast was present.

No chemistry whatsover between Gwen and Leia yet they're supposed to be best friends. The same could be said about all the kid actors, the whole 'bro' thing between Jay and Nate was incredibly annoying and out of place.

Who is the target audience for this show? People who are teenagers now or older viewers of the original show who were teenagers back in the mid 1990s or early to mid 2000s? It's not clear. It's supposed to be about 1990s nostalgia but it's shot, acted and presented like a modern day sitcom. It's framed the way people in the 2020s act, interact and think, not the way people acted, interacted and thought in 1995.

Some of Red's mannerisms are uncharacteristic of him, or at least uncharacteristic of what they were in the original show. Even the rather rare 'foot in your ass' jokes aren't particularly funny or well delivered.

No mention of Hyde or Laurie, it's as if they never existed. Very disrespectful towards those characters. Even Betsy (Jay's half-sister) is totally overlooked.

Too many sexual innuendos that aren't funny, don't make much sense and are kinda embarassing to watch. The original cast didn't have them as much plus they were actually good and usually very funny.

What happened to Kelso's (Ashton Kutcher's) voice? He sounds like he went through puberty again.

What happened to Fez's (Wilmer Valderrama's) accent? He still has the same unnatural and uncharacteristic accent he had in the second half of the original's show seventh and the entire eighth season.

Fez being Gwen's stepfather is kinda gross, doesn't sit well with me.

The character of Sherri is completely useless and the whole trashy mom angle is kinda annoying. Also, she is supposed to live next door to the Formans but her house looks nothing like the Pinciotti's house did. Unfortunately, we will likely see a lot more of her if this show continues for a second season and beyond.

While Fenton's appearance is somewhat relevant to the storyline, both Leo's appearances really feel out of left field. It's as if he is only there just for the sake of being there, for the sake of nostalgia and serves no actual purpose.

The second part of the season (from episode 5 onwards) feels very disjointed compared to the first 4 episodes. It's as if the writers didn't know what to do with the characters.

I did not care for Leia and Jay "dating" one bit or for any of the romance for that matter.

Overall, the whole show so far feels like it was a show shot in the 2020s (which it is) which means wokeness on steroids and very kiddy like Disney channel vibes overall. If this had been done 10-15 years ago AND not on Netflix, I feel like we would have less of this and a show that everyone would like. Also the kid actors are clearly and utterly unable to carry this show like Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Wilmer Valderrama and Danny Masteron all did back in 1998. I am willing to give it a second try if there is a second season but they need to improve the writing significantly and the original cast need to be more present. If there is a way to get in touch with the producers and writers, I would love to send them an email with some of my ideas.
